Traditional Hand-Sewn Kilts
Traditional hand-sewn kilts are the gold standard for highland dance kilt outfits, and required for Premier-level competitive dancers. They are are made with 100% worsted twill-weave wool. If cared for properly, traditional hand-sewn kilts hold their value after many, many years of wear.
Our traditional hand-sewn kilts are custom-made with the attention to detail that customers expect and the quality that the tradition deserves. We work with our customers to plan the design, fit, and adjustability of their kilt based on their individual needs.
Note on yardage requirements: Yardage required will depend on several factors including the wearer’s hip circumference and body shape, the tartan’s sett width, anticipated body changes that may require future alterations, etc. These factors will be discussed with the customer as part of the process of designing their kilt.

Signature Custom Kilties
Our Signature Custom Kilties are pleated to the sett and machine sewn. Our kilties fasten with one waist buckle at the fringe edge of the outer apron, and Velcro on the inner apron. Kilties are appropriate for Pre-Premier competition use, performances, medal tests, and for general frolicking.
Our Signature Custom Kilties are special because they have:
proper apron shaping that is usually only seen in hand-sewn kilts, for a more custom and flattering fit
full depth pleats, and pleated to the sett
proper pleat tapering for an excellent fit around curves
canvas-interfaced waistbands for comfort and durability
generous foldbacks at both apron edges, for ease of future alterations
a growth pleat
In order to mitigate bulk at the back, the pleats are made wider than what we would typically see in traditional hand-sewn kilts. However, this allows us to provide excellent shaping for hips and bums without creating excess bulk around the waist.
Whether you are an adult who is starting Highland dance or coming back to it as a Pre-Premier, a kid who wants a better-fitting kiltie, or an adult who knows they shouldn’t be wearing their costly dance kilt in the beer tent (but you still wanna look cute), FSK’s Signature Custom Kilties are an affordable way to get a flattering, well-fitted, truly custom kiltie.
Most of our kilties use 3 to 6 metres of tartan (1.5 - 3 metres of double width tartan fabric). As with traditional hand-sewn kilts, the labour cost is directly linked to the yardage required.

Custom Aboyne Bodices
Our custom aboyne bodices are fully lined, fully interfaced, and have metal lacing grommets. Dancers have their choice of square petals, round petals, or scallops.
Dancers must be measured in-person for aboyne bodices.

Petticoats / Underskirts
Our petticoats are made with 100% pre-shrunk cotton poplin, for breathability and durability. Option of choosing a very basic petticoat (4 metre wide rectangle gathered onto an elastic waistband), or a two-tier petticoat for less bulk around the waist.
Nationals Blouses
Our nationals blouses are made with 100% pre-shrunk cotton poplin, constructed with historical techniques including underarm gussets and flat-felled seams, for a comfortable, breathable, extremely durable blouse that always stays tucked in.
Add-on options:
split hem for an easy fit over larger hips
sleeves gathered into 1/2” cuffs, to prevent sleeves from riding up the arms
Aboyne Skirts and Plaidies
Our aboyne skirts have canvas-interfaced waistbands for structure, comfort, and durability. The waistband closure is Velcro, with a snap mid-way down the slit to prevent gapping.
Our plaidies are 36”x36” but they can be made in other sizes upon request.
Custom Bow Ties
We offer custom bow ties in two designs:
The Standard Pre-tie bow tie, which features a double layer bow design and adjustable D-ring and Velcro closure
The Quick Release Kids’ bow tie, which features a single layer bow design and a small Velcro closure for ease of removal and for safety
Custom Balmorals
Made to measure balmoral bonnets in tweed or tartan, with hand-knit dicing trim and hand-made pompom. All balmorals contain tailor-stitched canvas interfacing for a durable balmoral that holds its shape.
