Measurements
It is not advisable to measure yourself, as it can be difficult or impossible to maintain good posture while holding the measuring tape. If possible, have a friend or family member help you. When measuring circumferences, the tape measure should be pulled snug like how the garment will fit, but not too tight. Wider tape measures are more accurate at measuring circumferences than narrower tape measures.
The four basic measurements required for a Signature Custom Kiltie or for securing a ballpark quote for a Custom Traditional Kilt are:
Waist circumference, taken at the natural waist. To find the natural waist, side-bend and observe where the skin crease appears. Mark the deepest part of this crease with a pen mark. Measure at this mark while standing up straight. Highland dancers should engage their core muscles while this measurement is being taken.
Hip circumference, taken at the fullest part of the hip or bum. For highland dancers, this measurement should be somewhat snug. A sticker or a small piece of tape can be adhered to the person’s shorts at the fullest part of the hips to use as a reference.
Waist to hip length, taken on the back side of the person. Measure from the pen mark at the waist to the sticker or tape at the hip.
Waist to hem length. For dancers, the kilt should reach the top of the kneecap. Be sure to take this measurement with the dancer standing up straight and NOT looking down.
